Dear friends of Italian, Anywhere,
“Piano piano,” week by week, post by post, we together will explore Calabria, the "toe" of Italy’s boot. It is an enchanting region known for its breath-taking coastline, rugged mountains, its myths and deep historical roots. Washed by the Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas, it boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in Italy, dramatic cliffs, and picturesque seaside villages.
Together, we'll uncover its secrets and dig up its treasures.
Why Calabria is Special
🌊 Stunning Coastline – From the Tyrrhenian Costa degli Dei (Coast of the Gods) to the Ionian Costa di Ulisse (Coast of Ulysses), Calabria has pristine beaches with crystal-clear waters and dramatic rock formations.
🏔️ Mountains & National Parks – The Aspromonte, Sila, and Pollino National Parks are filled with ancient forests, waterfalls, and hiking trails. The region is perfect for adventure lovers and nature enthusiasts.
🏛️ Rich History & Culture – Calabria has been influenced by Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Spaniards, French and Norman civilizations. Towns like Gerace, Stilo, Reggio Calabria, Kroton and more are filled with historic churches, castles, and archaeological sites, including the famous Riace Bronzes—two stunning Greek warrior statues.
🍝 Delicious Cuisine – Calabria is famous for its spicy flavours and fresh ingredients. Local specialties include ‘nduja (a spreadable spicy sausage), fileja pasta, and caciocavallo cheese. The region also produces excellent olive oil, wine, and citrus fruits, particularly the rare bergamot and cedar lemon.
🎭 Authentic & Less Touristy – Unlike the crowded hotspots of Lake of Como or Venice, Calabria remains relatively undiscovered, making it ideal for travellers seeking a more authentic Italian experience with warm hospitality.
